LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
Consideration of the learning environment(s) is important for the success of all learners. In our project we look closely at the physical environments that we will be a part of and how these environments help support our learners. Each of our individual classrooms works to support our learners' needs through responsive teaching and Universal Design for Learning.
Our high school is a one-to-one school, meaning each student is expected to have a laptop with them at all times. We will take advantage of this by having the high school students help the kindergarten students to take pictures on the provided iPods, as well as helping them evaluate the pictures they wish to keep, help them download them to a google doc and record the behaviour, attitude, and feelings that day.
The availability of Assistive Technology through the one-to-one lap top use allows for students at the high school level to access support (text to speech, speech to text, online dictionaries, Google Docs, etc). The assistive technology supports for the Kindergarten students include such things as slant boards, pencil grips, camp chairs and other fidget tools. In addition, adult modelling of speech and behaviour and cueing will be additional supports for some young children. The increased numbers of young adults and adults to Kindergarten students will help to create a small ratio of additional support. (See SETT documents on the Leaner Profiles page for detailed descriptions).

Through this collaborative project we are leveraging the physical environment and supports available within them to support engagement and self-regulation in the learning of all students.
